Art
“I like art because you can do lots of interesting stuff” — 4th year boy
Each pupil is provided with opportunities to develop his potential to the maximum in a learning environment that is both challenging and enjoyable. Pupils are taught to develop the skills required to use a range of materials and techniques competently. They develop an appropriate vocabulary to help them understand and discuss their own work and that of others, including artists from their own and other cultures.
To help us achieve our aims we strive to create an atmosphere in the Art room which fosters a spirit of cooperation, tolerance, hard work and self-reliance. Knowing about Art is also a vital aspect of the teaching of Art. The department has a large library which pupils use and are encouraged to borrow books to take home.
Every project undertaken in class refers to the work of artists
All Art lessons are double periods of 75 minutes. From the Lower First to the Fourth Year, pupils attend Art classes every week. In the Fifth Year, pupils have Art lessons in rotation with Design Technology.
All pupils in the First, Second, Third and Fourth Years have their own sketchbook in which they do the majority of their preparatory work. Larger pieces are documented and inserted in their sketchbook alongside their initial studies to show how their ideas have developed. Pupils in the Lower First and First Year, have Personal Art Journals in which they produce individual studies. Older pupils may produce a Personal Art Journal or a body of work for the ‘Pupil Artist of the Month’ award.
