History
Regular visits are made to museums and historic sights.
Through the study of history boys are encouraged to develop skills of inquiry and communication, and invited to consider a wide variety of historical perspectives , from political and economic, to social, religious and cultural.
The curriculum is largely based on British History up to the 19th Century, though elements of ancient European, world and local history are also present. In their final year at Colet Court boys follow a course on British Social, Economic, Political and Imperial History from 1750 to 1850, which has been specially designed to fit the requirements of the St Paul’s School transfer exam.
History workshops led by visiting presenters, and visits to museums and historic sites feature strongly in the curriculum.
Our aim is to equip pupils with:
- a knowledge and understanding of history;
- an awareness that history is not the complete story of the past but a selected quantity of material and, as such, is liable to omissions and susceptible to various interpretations;
- a knowledge of the way history is reconstructed from varied source material and some of the problems associated with such sources.
We also aim to make a significant contribution to the literacy levels of our pupils, with work aimed at promoting the careful appreciation of texts and the importance of well-presented and carefully written assignment work.
