Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship

The PSHE programme is an exciting and broad curriculum that is designed to help the boys in all aspects of their life providing them with a firm foundation which will be built upon as they mature into young men.

There are many different ways of describing what education is all about. At its most basic level, it is there to prepare children for their place in an adult world by acquiring knowledge and passing exams.

We have a fundamental responsibility to help children in their personal and social development.

However, few would want to suggest that this is a well balanced education! Along with parents, schools have a fundamental responsibility to help children in their personal and social development. Without a doubt, this type of education happens in a variety of ways, both inside and outside the classroom, in extracurricular activities and through the daily assembly.

Within the personal aspect of PSHE, boys will learn to address their feelings, attitudes and values. We aim to promote pupils' self esteem and encourage them to make well informed decisions. The social aspect will relate to the context in which they live - their peers, family and community. This will also involve a citizenship programme where the boys learn about the society in which they live - from a local, national and global perspective. The PSHE programme aims to equip them with the knowledge, skills and understanding to become full and active citizens. Finally, within health education boys will learn how to lead a healthy lifestyle, addressing issues such as healthy eating, exercise, smoking, drugs and mental well being.

The school is supported in its PSHE delivery by outside speakers and organisations such as the fire and police service, magistrates and through involvement with local citizenship projects.
