Science
Our three laboratories are packed with amazing equipment allowing staff to use a range of modern resources to enhance their teaching and bring science to life for our boys. Science is taught to all boys in a very practical way whereby they gain confidence in the handling of scientific apparatus, taking full advantage of our three fully equipped laboratories.
Pupils' work in the laboratories is linked to the world outside
The science course is essentially that of the National Curriculum and is presented in a stimulating and interesting way, linking the pupils' work in the laboratories with the world outside while fully developing each boy's academic potential.
To enrich the pupils learning experience they visit the Wetlands centre while in the Lower First and Whipsnade Zoo in the First Year. A lunchtime club is also open to boys in the First Year. It is our aim to present the subject in a stimulating and interesting way, one in which the boys have fun learning science. Boys are also taken on a week's field course to a Field Studies Council centre in the Lake District in the Fourth Year. This is run jointly with the Geography Department and the boys cover the ecological sections of the syllabus on this field course.
As is recommended for the 8-13 age group, science is taught as an integrated discipline but moving towards greater separation of subjects as the pupils progress towards the final examination for transfer to St Paul's.
Health and safety considerations are very important to us and the department follows approved professional guidelines.
