Manan's day out at the RGS

My excitement began a couple of weeks back when I learnt that I was one of the three winners of the highly commended awards in the 9-11 age category of the ‘Young Geographer of the Year 2011’ competition, organized by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS). On Friday 18 November morning, I got my school uniform on, not to go to school but to the Young Geographer award ceremony at the RGS building! RGS was formed in the earlier 19th century, and is considered the home of geography.

The award ceremony started with Mr Michael Palin, President of the RGS and maker of famous travel documentaries like ‘Himalaya’ and ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ giving a short speech. He shared his childhood fascination of exploring landscapes around Sheffield and narrated stories of his travels around the world. He emphasised how knowledge of geography helps us understand our world and the environment around us. He then presented the awards by age categories (9-11, 12-14, 14-16 and 16-18). When my name was called I walked towards the podium feeling a sense of excitement and happiness. I received a certificate, a pocket Atlas, a map of London, two wall maps – Europe and World, and a year’s subscription of the ‘Geographical’ magazine. The highlight of the ceremony for me was the opportunity I got to get Mr Palin to autograph my pocket atlas and certificate. The ceremony concluded with a buffet lunch. I would like to thank Mr Edwards and Mr Howe for guiding and encouraging me on this project. I look forward to participating in next year’s competition.
