African Art Workshop

Monika Wengraf-Hewitt visited Colet Court with her vast collection of African tribal artefacts. Her father was one of the leading African art dealers in London - so she inherited many of his pieces, as well as amassing her own collection on her travels to Africa.

African Art by a Fourth Year boy

She began the workshop by explaining some of the stories behind some of the objects and their various uses. Monika is particularly knowledgeable about how different tribes live off the land. The boys really enjoyed hearing about the tribes’ varied hunting methods and weapons. After her talks, the boys were invited to examine a piece more closely and to document it carefully in their sketchbooks. They tried to capture a ‘sculptural’ feel to the drawings and to use materials to describe the textures of the artefact.
