Portrait painting

Nicholas' portrait work.jpg

During the summer Nicholas Maini produced a series of eight portrait paintings. He worked on them while staying in Spain and used a combination of gouache and acrylic paint to work up the surface and record the varying features and textures of the faces. The portraits are done from both life and second-hand sources and are of people he knows and also of strangers. Nicholas painted the pictures on thin plywood, which is very clever, because not only does the wood grain add an interesting texture but the colour of the wood adds a warm glow to the faces. The portraits are on display in reception.
