Europe Day Commemoration Service

Westminster Abbey, Sunday 9 May

Europe Day commemorates the famous declaration to create a European Union by the French foreign minister Robert Schuman. Robert Schuman was one of the founders of the European ideal. Europe Day is a symbol which helps bring unity amongst Europeans.

The Dean and Chapter of Westminster Abbey decided to hold a commemoration service, and European nationals from Colet Court were invited to represent their countries. Boys arrived at 5:50 pm for a rehearsal where Canon Napier gave instructions on how they were to escort the European flag bearer who was to process the flag up the nave and present it to the Dean. The service started at 6:30 pm, and the clergy and ambassadors entered through the Great West Door and processed up the nave into the Lantern. Then the flag was presented to the Dean, and boys took their seats for the service.

After the service was finished, boys processed back to the Dean and, along with the flag bearer, were given back the flag and they then processed through the screen into the nave and stood in the guard of honour position as the clergy and ambassadors, filed out. After the service boys were able to meet their countries’ ambassadors and there was also an opportunity to look over the Abbey, cloisters and College Garden. The Dean and Canon Napier have expressed their great thanks to boys who participated for sparing their time and doing such a splendid job.
