Successful chess teams at EPSCA semi-finals

On Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 May, two under 9 teams and two under 11 teams represented Colet Court at the English Primary Schools Chess Association semi-finals at Brean Sands, Somerset.

From the 20 teams who qualified for the under 9 semi-final, our A and B teams were placed 9th and 10th with scores of 14½ points and 14 points respectively out of a possible maximum of 30 points. The A team received a silver award for their achievement. Our top scorers were Sang Hon Wee (5½ points out of 6), Nicholas Mayfield (5 points), Amu Varma (4½ points) and Ilyas Mardin (4½ points). Aaron Banit played extremely well on the top board for the A team, winning three of his games and drawing one.

There were 30 teams in the under 11 section of the competition. Our B team scored 15 points and came in 14th place and our A team scored 15½ points and were placed 12th, which also meant they received a silver award. Rohit Majumdar and Ross Menhennet had a very successful weekend, each winning five of their six games. Erik Gunby and Krishna Amin both won four games, and a mention should also go to Ryan Hunt, who won three games against his under 11 opponents, even though he is in the First Year! Well done to all the boys for qualifying for the semi-finals and for playing some very good chess this weekend.
