On Wednesday 12 September, the Under 10A Rugby Team went to The Oratory in Reading to play their first tournament of the season. They were competing for the Cardinal’s Cup and were fortunate to win it after a string of very successful performances. Below is their tournament report, written by Zach Campbell.
Our first match was against Caldicott and we won 15-5, with James Baxter and Henry Kuenstler scoring. Our second match was against the home team, Oratory, which we won 10-5, with the front row, Daniel Lucas, Ben Pymont and James Nielsen rucking very well. Next we played St John’s Beaumont, and won 20-10, with Joseph Schull scoring. Next up were our close rivals, Donhead. We were leading 5-0 at half time, but they scored early in the second half. In the last play, Dylan Straker Grimes crucially intercepted a pass very well, and was through, but accidentally ran over the ‘dead ball line’, which meant we ended up drawing. Our last match was against St Benedict’s. We needed to score a lot of tries to win the tournament. The final score was 35-10, with three tries from Joseph Schull, others from Freddie Sims, Ben Pymont and James Baxter. Fortunately Donhead had lost 5-0 to St John’s Beaumont, which gave us victory in the tournament. We won a big silver trophy, and each got medals and flags. We came home late, tired, but overwhelmed with how well we had done so early in the season. Thank you to Mr Young for taking us and being a very supportive coach.
