Drama clubs and productions

“We're doing lots of things and I'm really busy” — 3rd year boy

With our school hall and drama studio we are well equipped to provide opportunities for a rich and varied programme of extra curricular drama. Boys of all ages have the chance to experience acting in a wide variety of roles and to help backstage. Members of light and sound club work with our drama technician programming lights and special effects, and parents help with costumes and make-up. The overall sum of the parts can be electrifying.

School Plays

Every year there is a major school production in the Autumn Term, which is either a musical or a play. It will involve a large cast of boys (and sometimes girls - from St Paul's Girls School). Our intention is to stage interesting, imaginative productions, including music, dance and innovative staging wherever possible.

In the Spring Term, we put on a Third Year Play; this gives all boys in the Third Year the opportunity to take part in a major school production.

The Second Year Play Writing Competition is held in the Summer Term. With the support of his English teacher, every boy in the Second Year writes a short play. In Drama lessons, he then has the challenge of performing in and directing his play. The best two plays from each class go forward to a competition final.

Further Drama Opportunities

When a school play is not in rehearsal, lunch time Drama Clubs are on offer. Any interested boys are welcome to attend these clubs.

Boys with a particular interest in the technical side of theatre may join the Light and Sound Club. Our Theatre Technician teaches them how to operate our sophisticated sound and lighting equipment, which enables the boys to provide technical support for class assemblies, school plays, and other events.

Each term, class assemblies give boys the chance to perform in front of the school and their parents. Boys enjoy English, French and History theatre workshops, which are provided by some of London's excellent theatre-in-education companies.

From time to time, visits are made to see theatre productions in the West End or at local theatres. For instance, each year the Third Years visit The Globe, as part of their Shakespearean studies, boys in the Junior School attend a Christmas Show and boys in their final year attend a West End matinee performance of a major production.
